"While many consider this Vangelis score to be more "restrained" thansome of his others‚ I find it to be one of his most varied‚ cross-genrescores. It possesses a musical mixture of beauty‚ suspense‚ passionand sensuality (a good reflection of the plot in Polanski?s film!). The new OWM series is known for its looping‚ and this release iscertainly no exception. However‚ this only occurs in certain tracksand the sound of the disc overall is very good. Vangelis takes usthrough a plethora of styles here. The opening titles are delicate andfit the image of the sea perfectly. "Day in Paris" is a simple andeffective romantic theme which introduces Emmanuel Seigner?s character.There are others tracks that are oriental‚ sensual‚ rhythmic‚ jazzyand even ominous. Some tracks on this release are very similar tothemes found on the more recent "Cavafy" (tracks 8‚ 11‚ 12) Certainly‚Cavafy tracks‚ such as the "Bospherus Theme‚ "" I?d like to speak.."and "Family Grief" sound like they could be on this release. (The"Themes 2" bootleg gives a good montage of the main themes from thefilm in the track titles "Suite from Bittermoon.") While there is nodriving central theme or distinctive melody in many of the music in thefilm‚ Vangelis has to be commended for really having stretched theboundaries of genres very effectively. Lastly‚ the album closes withthe achingly beautiful closing titles‚ one of Vangelis most unabashedromantic melodies in recent memory."
